Indonesia was one of the five largest markets in Asia Pacific for the sale of debit card and prepaid Visa cards. Indonesia Country Manager of Visa International Asia Pacific, Ellyana C Fuad said that in Indonesia, debit and prepaid cards get attention and interest both from consumers with the achievement of 68 percent.

“This is a significant number of all Visa cards in circulation in the market,” he said in a release Ellyana in Jakarta.
According to him, more than nine million debit and prepaid Visa cards have been issued in Indonesia. Total transactions during 2006 reached 225 000. “The growth is 24 percent compared with 2005,” he said.

Of note Visa International Asia Pacific, he explained, debit and prepaid card growth in the region reached almost twice the rate of global growth last year. Reportedly, the total sales volume in 2006 including cash transactions amounting to U.S. $ 156 billion. This figure jumped 31 percent compared with 2005. Meanwhile, total sales volume for the debit card program and prepaid customers increased 17 percent to $ 2.7 trillion.

Executive Vice President and General Manager Product Group, Visa International Asia Pacific, Rahul Khosla added, debit and prepaid products is an important product in providing payment options for consumers in the region. According to him, prepaid and debit card is now a major product for consumers in Asia Pacific. “Three years ago, the volume of retail sales and prepaid Visa cards and transactions across the world for the first time exceeded the volume achieved by the use of credit cards,” said Khosla. Explained, last year consumers in Australia, India, Thailand was in the top three for debit and prepaid markets in Asia Pacific. Transaction volume reached more than 62 percent of total retail sales and prepaid debit as well as cash transactions. Overall, said Khosla, nearly 100 million debit and prepaid cards customers who have been issued in the Asia Pacific region until the end of last year.
